We welcome our newest staff member; BluDrive, to the Farmyard team with her review of Nevermore 3. An old (2009 release) side scrolling browser game.

I was first attracted to Nevermore because of its cute and simplistic art style, one that is getting to be more and more popular on handheld and mobile consoles ever since the days ofLocoRoco.

You play as Olek who is searching for treasure to help out his village. The dominant species in Nevermore 3 is a race of Anteaters who after working all their lives in the mines below their home, Moss town, now simply loll around all day drinking tea. After doing a good deed for an elderly Anteater, you finally get to do some treasure hunting. By this time players are supposedly meant to have mastered the run-jump timing, however I was still having trouble. It takes quite a knack to get it just right as the p

latforms are sometimes a bit small which means falling down into dark pits and having to go back the long way all the time, which did become a little bit frustrating.

The games’ engine (made by Sophie Houlden) is programmed in a way that Olek can jump incredible distances considering his size, meaning that the platforms have to be spaced further apart than expected, but you get used to this pretty much straight away. The controls are straightforward and the puzzles are simple, so it wont leave you feeling flustered after spending 20 minutes trying to figure out where to go. The warm atmosphere created by the art and gentle music alone was enough to hold me until the end.

Aside from a bit of treasure, Olek can also collect a handful of different (and sometimes bizarre) hats on his adventures which add a cute but somewhat limited replay value to this very short game. Near the end you encounter the “Once Great and Feared” Dolorus monsters, something I found hard to believe as centuries trapped in a cave has reduced them to a bunch of adorable, smiling pink ghosts.

Nevermore 3 is reminiscent of the Japanese Ghibli films with its wooden buildings and peaceful water-powered machinery. Rather than an adventure, this is more of an art game, enjoyable for its simplicity and fluid-like game play as well as a subtle, often sarcastic humour.

After completing it, I just had to go back and play the first 2 versions of Nevermore and in terms of art; I’d say it has progressed greatly since the original. It was great that Adam had his website in the credits too because even during the game I was wanting to see what the concept art looked like as there has obviously been a lot of thought put into this world. If searching for something action packed you will be disappointed but if looking for a serene, inexpensive way to pass half an hour or so Nevermore 3 is just the ticket.

You can play Nevermore 3 right here.
